Question 2. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

Our main product has resulted as very positive in results and a good quality. The teaser trailer has in combination become extremely positive and effective. It has resulted in keeping to the target of the chosen genre, which is a romantic comedy trailer for a film. We have effectively kept to this genre by using essences of romance and comical factors when planning and then presenting onto our work. We brought romance to our trailer by using an already existent couple to film for our coursework.

My poster relates to the brief and genre of the romantic comedy genre. It exceeds to all its characteristics and stereotypes. On the front of the poster the models shown are attractive and instantly make you as an audience drawn to the page, this is because if the people on the front of the page are attractive this instantly attracts any audience, male or female, no matter what film genre your interested into. If on the other hand, I decided to photograph and use less unattractive models for the cover the poster would result in being less popular and the film less successful. I decided not to clutter the front of the poster page with too much text and information, as I thought it should be clear, simple and effective. The detail of text boxes and information, I thought I would leave to the magazine cover page, which normally includes more text and information itself.  I decided to choose a large and bold font for the masthead for the poster, as it would be eye catching and stand out of the page, especially from the background photo used.  Also making the text bold and clear, using it in…. font makes it unisex being directed at both sex’s making the poster and film more popular. I as well used a unisex colour to have the same overall effect on the film and poster itself as, as a romantic comedy you would expect it to be more popular for both younger girls, and older teenage girls. But I have planned from the beginning for the film to be created for both male and female of most ages to be enjoyed and be attracted to my film. I weaved the little information in separately away from the photo, so it wouldn’t overlap over it. This is because I think it would look more bold itself if it was arranged seperatly from the photo, and would be and look more clear to read from a distance. The size of the font I have decided to choose from is a vast difference from the size of the masthead on the poster. The actor’s names will be sized slightly bigger than the overall film information, as I have decided to present them as subheadings that I have decided to include on the front for my posters presentation. Although the film’s information that will be used to inform the audience, will be in the same font as the subheadings. This makes the poster much more clear and straight forward, as it informs you about the poster quickly and tells you the major needed details, and gives the audience an interest. The photo I taken and decided to use brings the comical form from the genre romantic comedy and gives you the essence that the film includes a variety of romance. It also includes the storyline of the online chatting website ‘Friend Finder’ which is a positive aspect as it gives the audience an overall feel of the film, and what its about.

The magazine cover on the other hand still includes the overall feeling of romance and comedy, as the photos I have taken and selected from to use, have the same effect and include the feeling of the chosen genre. Although I have made slight differences in the presentation of the information and textboxes, as there is a wider amount of information and mastheads on the cover of the magazine, which informs the readers about the film. The information includes, reviews, interviews with actors, released dates, the films premiere, and overall film production information. Also the presentation of the magazine of the poster is slightly different from the poster as, whereas in contrast to my magazine cover the poster is only using one photography, which is used as a background. Whereas on the magazine cover I will use one selected photo as a background cover page, and then numerous photos to be presented around the page, for interest and informing the readers about the film.  I am including a completely different style of masthead to use on the magazine cover, as the film itself and poster are completely different to the magazine as the magazine is itself a film magazine that includes, various different information about other films too. The layout of the masthead will be at the very top of the page, as it’s a normal factor and stereotype of any magazine cover to be laid out there.  The colour will be different but will still have the same overall plan on using a unisex colour to attract both sexes to the same magazine. Also unlike the poster using black font for information, I will be deciding to use a wide variety of colours to make the page look more attractive, fun and inviting for readers, and audiences.

 Our trailer we have been making in groups has fulfilled its meaning on its genre of a romantic comedy. It’s quick and effective. It uses the use of comical comedy within the trailer as well as, aspects of romance. The trailer interests both male and females, and the actors we selected to use are attractive and young. The music used on the trailer we have recorded uses a famous artist that attracts younger children, teenagers, and some adults. The trailer uses a wide variety of camera angles, including mid shots, long shots, extreme close ups, and over the should shot. Also we have used a variety of camera movements including panning from across the screen.

Final Draft of Trailer


This is the final draft of our trailer. We made some small corrections which I feel improves the trailer greatly. The corrections made, helped create a more professional, gripping and effective trailer.

The Creation of Friend.Finder.com







Before filming our trailer, we created a homepage called Friend.Finder.com so we could show this in our trailer to give the affect of the characters actually suing the website. Also, filming this as part of the trailer, showing the characters talking to each over, makes the story more believable which is the affect we wanted to achieve.

Analysis  of poster designs
When researching film posters advertising romantic comedy, I realised that portraying the comedy value would prove to be more of a struggle when I create my own poster as I didn’t know how I could make this clear to the audience. The romance was much clearer to recognise, shown through the actors body language, facial expression and pose as well as  the different use of style and text on the posters. Such as the bold, clear and brightly coloured  text that all provide the feel you should get from this genre. The colour red and other feminine colours and fonts seemed to be vital on a romantic comedy poster, as though they were purposely designed to attract women. After my research into film posters focusing on this sub-genre, the love story between the characters and their romance I found was much easier to get across instead of the comedy aspect of the film, so therefore I felt the poster that I create should get across both romance and comedy clearly and affectively.
Poster 1: The diagonal masthead across the poster that iv drawn, instantly tells the audience that the film being advertised is not formal and serious, but gets across the fun and good-feel aspect shown through the brightly coloured letters. The way I have used a dot separating the two words, making it look like its is a web-address immediately informs the audience that the film is focused around a web-site so therefore gives an in-sight into the story-line. Other text used on this drawing are the names of two familiar young actors that are known to appear in romantic comedy’s, to convey the age-range of the two characters in the trailer. I've drawn a selection of characters on this poster that could also be starring in Friend.Finder.com, as well as the two love interests, and used two familiar names Dakota Fanning and Aaron Johnson, who I imagined could play these roles.

As well as the images of various characters, I have also drawn two computer screens; one computer screen with the word ‘Snob’ and the other with the word ‘Geek’ which creates humour for the viewer and also informs them that the film is a romantic comedy. If I was to use this drawing as my focused design for my real product, I would like to make the poster in a cartoon design with bright colours to reflect the feel-good genre. I feel this will be something different but will still maintain maturity.
Poster 2: This design of a movie poster shows four individual images of characters in a small square around the edges of the poster, from our movie Friend.Finder.com. I thought showing other characters as well as
the two main characters on this design would create interest because I have also named the well-known actors above the image who are known for appearing in romantic comedy’s. These extra names I have used are actors such as; Hilary Duff and Dakota Fanning, who also act as persuasive text to name-drop on the poster and therefore influence the audience  into already having a positive impression of film being advertised. The drawings iv done of the two main characters are at the top of the poster with their names under them, insinuating that these are the two main characters. I have also drawn this part of the poster as though they are looking at each over. The masthead iv designed is placed in the middle of the poster which instantly eye-catches the audience. The masthead would also be a consistent logo, and the colour red would work well to relate to the romance of the film. Other pieces of text which is used on the design is the writing telling the audience when the film is released. Most of the posters I researched commonly uses the persuasive words of ‘Coming Soon’ which I then used on this design and also the layout of the poster I related to other posters advertising romantic comedy.
Poster 3: This particular design shows the audience that the film involves  a website. I’ve drawn the characters on a computer on each side as though they’re talking to each over. I have also used the design of a split-screen to represent how their opposites. The icon iv drawn in the corner of this poster is a small heart with the words ‘Coming Soon’, this relates to the genre of the film.
Poster 4: I thought this specific design was affective and got across the story-line well, and maintained interest, making the audience want to watch the film. The masthead has been made in a clear font, resembling real web addresses from the use of the dot.

Poster 5: Using a laptop screen as the focus of this poster tells the viewer this film must be focused around technology, and because of the recognition that its a romantic comedy, the audience begin to guess what the film could be like.  Although this is quite a simple design, it has a great appeal. I have then included text in capital letters reading, ‘OPPOSITE’S DO ATTRACT’. The fact that the word ‘Do’ has been made bold puts more emphasis on the meaning. I have used two captured words either-side of the laptop that resemble two stereotypes, but also put a love-heart next to the words to continue the guessing of what the story-line could be.
Poster 6: I found this design very appealing and considered designing my final poster this way. It allows the audience to get a lot of relevant information from the  eye-catching design but also be appealed by  characters shown, where I had tried to add to the comedy value, representing the genre, through their facial expression. I also found the idea of using descriptive text on one side of the poster, telling the audience some of the reviews this film has had. The affective split-screen iv drawn also shows how the love-interests are on one side, separating them from other characters who are clearly recognised to also be the same age as them, so the audience assume these are their friends. I've drawn the girl’s two popular friends on one side and also one of the boys friends, with all their mouths opened in shock that they’re together, which adds humour. Also on the poster I’ve wrote ‘OPPOSITES ATTRACT =‘ which resemble what the drawing in underneath. I then included the premier information on the poster announcing that it’s the premier of 2012, again persuading the audience to watch the film. I made this overall design quite cartoon-like which gives this poster a fun-feel to it immediately.
Poster 7: This poster uses descriptive and eye-catching text, showing the words ‘LOVE STRUCK!’ in big capital letters and also an appealing font. Telling the audience when the film is released is focused in a love-heart reading ‘Coming Soon’ which I felt would be in tone of the genre. The image of the two characters on the poster I have drawn them next to a computer screen showing her laughing while he is shown un-steadily tripping over. The text shown at the bottom of this poster reveals that the production who created the film ‘The Break Up’, a very successful rom-com, also created this film. This therefore gives a positive impression of this film.
Poster 8: This design is also quite simple but very affective, showing two characters next to each over with descriptive facial expressions. The masthead has been made very striking, with a small computer-screen next to it with a love-heart in-side it- recognising that its inside a computer-screen is also relevant. The characters are also in school uniform which tells the audience that these characters are young and the film is focused around them. I have made the writing at the bottom of the page, reading ‘COMING SOON’ in the same style writing as the masthead and I feel the simplicity of this particular design adds to the audience’s interest.

Film Magazine Planning and Design

Magazine Annotations


Magazine 7: With this magazine I have used another name, calling the magazine ‘Epic’ which I felt would attract to a young audience. Straight away, the audience sees the writing revealing ‘Our Biggest Preview Ever!’ which attracts to the reader as they will believe that it is also the best preview ever and they will want to read the magazine. I have drawn next to this piece of writing three squares where an image from the movie-trailer or photo-shoot for Friend.Finder.com would go, to convince the audience to read this certain magazine. The interesting element to this design is that the actors are not the main focus which is not a common convention of a movie magazine, however, I did find during my research magazines which do not focus entirely on the actors from the movie being advertised on the magazine, so I incorporated the story-line of Friend.Finder.com, in terms of them meeting over a website and creating a cyber-romance, and drew two computer screens with one descriptive word in each that are two opposite stereotypes. Although, the actors from this movie are not the main focus of this design, I have made the overall look of the magazine in quite a cartoon style and therefore drew the characters above the drawings of the computer screens like they were cartoon characters.
Magazine 8:
The last design I created was a movie magazine with descriptive text relating more to the actual film of Friend.Finder.com. For example, ‘They Both Found Love In A Friend’ which relates to the cyber-romance they found though Friend.Finder.com. Using a young actress like Emma Roberts as an example for who would play the role of the main girl character in Friend.Finder.com, was to relate to the age we would want our actors to be if someone famous was to play this role. The appealing masthead is also made eye-catching from the design of the attractive style of font with the gothic-style heart behind the writing. At the top of the magazine cover, informative text is noticed which I found through the magazine research, is commonly used.

Analysis of movie magazine designs

Magazine 1: Immediately, the masthead for this magazine design is very striking, using a flash affect over it to appeal to a teenage audience, enhancing this interest by the dark shade of red iv used and the black outline of the letters. I researched various different styles of movie magazines but also various different styles of fonts to make my final design I choose to design is immediately gripping. I’ve designed this magazine cover this way to attempt at creating a mature design. The layout of this cover I feel is very appealing as six characters from the film are shown, giving the audience more information on the film, but also allows the other characters who are seen furthest away, to add the comedy aspect of the film into this front cover. The way I have chosen to design the layout of this magazine was due to what I had found during my research, showing in a certain magazine an interesting layout and positioning of the actors which I then took to incorporate into my own design, and studying the specific style gave me the idea to use a boarder at the side of the magazine. The other pieces of text I’ve included on this design is ‘ALL NEW ENTERTAINMENT, LA vs. UK’ , getting across a rivalry between the UK and LA’s entertainment value and also hinting that inside the magazine will tell the audience more about what’s happening, relating to that specific piece of information. Also, the pieces of information at the bottom of this design inform the audience on 2012 events that are happening soon, in relation to film.
Magazine 2: This magazine design is very descriptive, but not too over powering. I’ve included images from the Friend.Finder.com photo-shoot which I felt would intrigue an audience as they would want to buys the magazine and see the photos.  One specific piece of information which stands out is the ‘LAUGH OUT LOUD FUNNY!’ which young people can relate to and will want to watch the film. Also, this information tells the audience that the film is a comedy as well as a romance. The audience are aware that the two characters as the focus of the magazine are the main characters from this film and are love-interests. The writing at the side of this design lets the audience know that the movie being advertised is the film ‘Friend.Finder.com’ and allows them to know when the release date is.
Magazine 3: The focus of this magazine is the main girl character from Friend.Finder.com and then there’s descriptive text around her which all acts as persuasion to get the audience wanting to read it. As the film is about a teenage love-story, young people would generally want to read this magazine so I have designed it according to the age-group. The famous names used are ones which I feel people would recognise and who I feel would be good at playing the roles, according to what I have seen them in, such as rom-coms.
Magazine 4:  Instantly, the interesting style of font I have use for the masthead in this design draws the audiences attention and the word ‘Action’ relates to the genre of magazine that this is, relating to film. The focus is the actor on the page with the words ‘NEW ROMANTIC OMEDY!’, telling the audience that he is from this new film and because he is in school uniform, is informing that the character is playing a school-boy. The well-known names beside him are people which are young actors so act as persuasive text, along with the noticeable ‘PLUS’ piece of writing which then mentions the films ‘The Hangover’ and ‘The Notebook’ which are total opposite genres to each over. This creates humour as the audience are aware of both these films and how opposite they are, however, I have purposely thought of a well-known comedy and a very romantic well-known romance and put something together which will intrigue the audience. Text telling the audience that there is an interview with this actor that’s on the front page will draw them into reading this magazine too.
Magazine 5:
As well as the information found on this front page,  I found myself debating what I should call the final movie magazine which ill create. This magazine design shows I have called it ‘Spotlight’ which I thought was an interesting and unique name for the magazine and also the film strip I thought was also a unique and appealing touch to the design. I also included drawings from the different clips of the films trailer on the film-strip. The genre of film is made clear through this as the audience are able to recognise the romance in the still-images. The text revealing that the magazine holds information on the films photo-shoot is also persuasive and attracts the audience.  I also took certain elements from other movie magazine that I thought could possibly be used on my own movie magazine, such as the piece of text explaining, ’20 NEW ROM-COMS FOR 2012’ and I have also made the number bigger than the rest of the text to emphasise this.
Magazine 6: This design I feel is quite an interesting approach to a design of a movie magazine. I have put a clapperboard in the corner of the magazine with the issue number of the magazine inside it. This was an idea which I thought could be on every issue of this magazine. Another appealing element on this design is the clear writing advertising a free movie poster inside the magazine. The text announcing an interview with two well-known stars is very persuasive on this front cover and will urge the audience to read it.
